    Homework... What?
Throughout my years in school, I never really understood why teachers gave us homework. Now in college, I understand the meaning of it all. Homework helps not only students, but teachers as well. The following are only a few examples of why.
    Homework is meant…
    · to help the students understand more of the topic talked about inside of class.
    · to let the students have more practice of the type of problems on various tests and quizzes
    · to help students understand the meaning of responsibility
    · to let the teacher know what he/she needs to work on to help the students understand more.
    · to help the teacher find out what to focus on more during class time.
    · to let the teacher see which students put more effort into the assignments
    · to let the teacher know which one of their students are having trouble in a certain area.
Here is my policy. The more homework, the more grades. With more grades, a student’s averages figure to be less points for each assignment. This is an easy way to not drop grades. However, it is also a harder way to gain grade points. I believe there are more pros than cons to assigning homework to students.

This strategy is implemented by the teacher and can be done in quite a few different ways. Some ways include:
A brief introduction to the topic. A speech given by the teacher to introduce the new topic.
Asking students to discuss what they already know about the topic before learning any new material.
Having students “skim through” information in a textbook. This acts as a preview so the students know what will be coming.

Teachers and students can sometimes have a rough relationship due to the assigning of "the dreaded homework". However, homework can actually be a teacher's best friend! Being students, they do not realize the benefits of getting and doing their assigned homework. As teacher's, we must remember that no matter how much complaining the students might do, assigning homework is one of the best learning strategies a teacher can give the student. There are various reasons as to why this is true. The most obvious reason is that it gives the student a chance to practice, other than at school. "Practice make perfect" seems to be a common phrase, most likely because it is true. For younger students, practice gives them the chance to better understand how to do the assigned homework, and also to learn how to excel in it. Practicing by homework also helps the student retain vital information for them to succeed in the class. Homework can also be a preparation system for future endeavors within the classroom. For example, if students were to go to a field trip based on plants, having some homework on the subject matter will help them be prepared to know what to learn when the field trip comes along. One of the most important reasons for homework is that it gets the students thinking. Thinking outside of the classroom will get them to think in a different way that will get them to apply it to specifically their own life. This will help them in the future, and in real-life. One other major reason for homework, especially for k-12th students, is that it gives the fundamental basics of what they will learn in college. College is important, because it gets people a job in the field they would like to be in. However, there is a reason students are required to do 12 years of school prior to it. College is hard and is where student’s will start to take the specific classes designed for their future career. So, those 12 years before college are what gives you the basic information to take those college classes. Here is a video that states this importance well:
So, the next time you debate on whether assigning homework today is a good a bad idea, remember this; Not assigning homework will ultimately be worse for the student.
